Treasures of the European Archives in a Transmedia Exhibition

Documents, which are the best testimony to our collective history, have been kept in archives since ancient times. They have rested in these repositories of knowledge for centuries, and now they come to light thanks to this exhibition, which brings together some of the great treasures held by the European archives.

The display of these treasures is possible thanks to the project European Digital Treasures, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. This project has brought together the Spanish State Archives and the States Archives of Hungary, Norway, Malta and Portugal, along with ICARUS (Austria) and the Munster University of Technology (Ireland). This collaboration, which has only been possible thanks to the digitized heritage of most of the archives of our continent, has resulted in a transmedia experience on the history of European discoveries.

This exhibition is the outcome of the European cooperation, a clear example of the combination of the capacities, heritage, diversity, value, and inspiration of all those who have made this project possible.

The narratives displayed here combine different technological tools that allow us to get to know our written past through multiple channels. On the basis that these documents have the remarkable ability to tell the micro-stories of the discoveries and inventions that forged European identity and heritage, these innovative products allow visitors to experiment and play, to learn and share, as well as to feel moved by our common past.

Visitors can interact with the following resources:

·         5 original documents from 2 different archives.

·         19 facsimiles from 8 countries.

·         19 digital reproductions of documents from 7 countries, displayed in interactive booths.

·         1 quiz game for people who love challenges.

·         1 memory matching game to encourage observation.

·         1 infinite running game to reward speed by catching archival documents.

·         1 interactive RPG game to learn how to work on an archive.

·         3 augmented reality experiences to explore parallel worlds.

·         Videos presenting the project and its merchandising products.

With long, hot, dry summers, and certain areas where water is scarce, an efficient and rational use of water has always been a serious issue for the various peoples that inhabited the Iberian Peninsula. The document shows the plan for a machine to raise fresh water from the river Tagus to the Alcazar de Toledo. The plan was designed by Giovanni Turriano ( c . 1505-1585) known in Spain as Juanelo Turriano, an engineer and technical advisor to King Charles I. Born in Cremona, Italy, Turriano moved to Spain in 1529 to serve king Charles I.
